Boeing SDBU-series Small-Diameter General-Purpose Bomb

Designation: Boeing SDBU-series Small-Diameter General-Purpose Bomb

Boeing’s series of small diameter bombs (SDBU) were designed in the early 2020s specifically for the internal weapons bays of the United Earth Expeditionary Force’s (UEEF’s) VA-5 Condor and the soon to go into production (or so they thought at the time) VF/B-9 Beta. Since these munitions were not expected to be carried externally, Boeing was able to concentrate on making the bombs as compact as possible, without the need to worry about aerodynamics. As such, all bombs in this series had a long, uniform shape with very little tapper at the front or rear. Rather than the traditional tail fins, as seen on older bombs such as the ubiquitous mk80 series of the pre-war United States’ military, the SDBU-series used a Vernier thruster ring on both ends the bomb’s body. This allowed the bomb the option of being used in space and in low air pressure environments such as Mars.

The SDBU-series came in the usual sizes, ranging from 100 kg to 2000 kg. This was a break from the usual sizes of 500 pounds through 4000 pounds, as seen in pre-war NATO bomb types. All variants came with a base-line IR imaging seeker, with an additional GPS guidance system for use in locations where global positioning satellites are available (the only location where this was the case was Earth, from 2019 when the network was reestablished until 2031 when the network was destroyed by the Invid). All versions were high-explosive fragmentation. Various fills were available, to include Tritonal, Minol and Composition H6.
