Brazil has officially split from the UEG by this time. Stone Men are a group of 300 plus former UEDF soldiers, mostly of Brazilian descent.8F
  • Major Nova Satori uses Colonel Wolfe’s meeting as a diversion while she moves in an assault force of UEDF battloids. The Stone Men are defeated in the attack, Murdock escapes.8F

2031 May 15

  • The Third Robotech War begins as the Invid arrive on Earth in an event known afterwards as the Invid Invasion. Both the beleaguered forces of the UEDF and the attacking forces of the EBSIS are completely destroyed and Earth falls quickly to the alien onslaught.1 Invid destroy Robotech Repair Satellite in the invasion and disrupt communications with an electromagnetic pulse (EMP).8F

The Second Robotech War (Space War II)

The Second Robotech War (Space War II)

by Tim Wing

(For a full list of sources, please see below.)

2027 February

  • Robotech Masters send a single Azashar-class mother ship as an advance scout ship, folding it to Earth with a portion of their remaining protoculture.3

2027 June

  • The Robotech Masters advance party arrives in Earth space. After placing themselves in position on the far side of the Earth’s moon, they conduct a probing attack on New Aomori, Japan, in the Far East Sector. During the attack, the Robotech Masters’ forces capture Colonel B.D. Edwards, of the UEDF Tactical Armored Cavalry. The Science Masters Triumvirate create a clone of him for the express purpose of acting as an agent.3
  • After replacing the real Colonel Edwards, the clone takes it upon himself to transfer data from the RRG’s main server, located in New Tokyo, back to the Masters Mother Ship. 3

2027 July

  • Taking advantage of the nationalist tendencies of the predominately Japanese members of the local UEDF units, the clone of Colonel Edwards stages a military coup. The coup ultimately fails and the UEDF reasserts UEG control over Japan.3
  • Full scope of the amount of classified information leaked to the Robotech Masters unknown until after the failed coup attempt. Information included, but was not limited to, the location of the SDF-1’s remains, interstellar communications network and equipment capabilities.
  • The UEDF home fleet finally succeeds in destroying the Robotech Masters’ Mother Ship. The Tactical Space Corps suffers heavy losses, but is still lulled into a false sense of security by the relative ease at which the Protoculture depleted ship was destroyed.3

2028 December

  • YFH-10 Ajax begins operational testing with the TASC.4

2029 January

  • The Robotech Masters fleet arrives in the solar system and take up a position in orbit around Saturn. Shortly thereafter, contact with Earth’s Strategic Factory Satellite and Hyperspace Relay Outpost, Space Station Liberty, is lost due to heavy electronic jamming by the Robotech Masters’ fleet.1
  • Responding to loss of contact with Space Station Liberty, an Earth fleet comes under attack from the (as yet unidentified) Robotech Masters’ forces. Additional Earth forces arrive and the enemy fleet retreats after gathering battle data.1

2029 March

  • MBR-21 Basilisk enters production.4

2029 April

  • One of the Robotech Masters motherships enters Earth orbit and launches a probing attack against Earth defense forces near Monument City. The attack is repulsed, but the mothership remains in Earth orbit.1
  • In the face of imminent hostilities, the UEDF prepares its counterattack. Details about the enemy are announced to the public and the government and military prepare for war.1

2029 May

  • A combined attack by Earth’s defense forces against the Robotech Masters’ flagship results with heavy losses. The Masters retaliate, and attack a major military base near Monument City. The attack is successfully repelled by the quick action of several local units, but the weaknesses of the United Earth Forces against Masters have become apparent.1

2029 June

  • A mission is launched to reestablish the link between Earth and Space Station Liberty, its Moon Base counterpart and the Robotech Expeditionary Force in deep space. Despite heavy harassment by the Robotech Masters’ forces, the mission succeeds and contact between Earth and Liberty is temporarily reestablished via line of site laser transmission.1
  • Message arrives on Tirol requesting reinforcements from the UEEF to fight the Masters. The Plenipotentiary Council orders a relief expedition to be sent as soon as possible. 9 It is decided that a large force cannot be sent to Earth, for fear of leaving Triol and Karbarra vulnerable to attack by the Invid. Captain John Carpenter is dispatched in the Tokugawa-class UES Hannibal to assess the situation on Earth. Because of the uncertainty in fold navigation, his voyage takes several months utilizing a series of navigational waypoints.4

2029 August

  • An undeclared cease fire is broken when the Robotech Masters attack and destroy a UEDF base. Twenty human survivors are taken captive, leading to public outrage.1
  • Under pressure from government leaders in the UEG, General Anatole Leonard (Supreme Commander of the Army of the Southern Cross) orders an immediate retaliatory strike against the counsel of some of his advisors. The resulting attack against the Master’s mothership is a complete failure.1
  • Research proceeds on Robotech Masters technology. The Bioroid pilots are suspected of being captured and brainwashed humans by Earth scientists, and not micronized Zentraedi, as had been assumed. This information is kept top secret.1
  • A weakness in the Robotech Masters mothership is discovered and a squadron of hovertanks (15th Squadron, Alpha TAC Regiment) is air-dropped onto the hull of the Masters’ flagship to exploit this vulnerability. The attack is successful and the alien mothership is brought down and crashes to Earth within sight of Monument City.1
  • The 15th Squadron, Alpha TAC Regiment, led by Lieutenant Dana Sterling, succeeds in infiltrating the crashed mothership. Valuable intelligence is gathered from inside, including the capture of a Bioroid mecha.1

2029 September

  • Analysis of the captured Bioroid reveals much information about the Robotech Masters’ mecha as well as their use of Tiresian clones, not captured humans.1
  • Constant patrols begin around the downed flagship as debate within the general staff continues regarding the Masters and their true objectives toward Earth.1
  • The Robotech Masters launch attacks against the civilian populace of Monument City, and over two hundred prisoners are taken.1

2029 October

  • In their quest to find out more information about the humans on Earth, the Robotech Masters decide to insert Zor Prime, one of their prized clones of the original Zor, into human society as a spy. He is allowed to be captured during a battle in which the Masters successfully recover the mothership that had crash landed on Earth.1
  • A wounded Zor Prime is captured by the Global Military Police. With the cooperation of UEDF Chief of Staff, General Rolf Emerson, Zor is sequestered and receives medical attention in a secure location.1
  • The UES Hannibal arrives from deep space and is destroyed while ramming and destroying one of the Masters’ motherships. Field Marshall Leonard and General Emerson are informed that they cannot expect any immediate help from the Robotech Expeditionary Force due to defensive commitments on Tirol and Karbarra.1

2029 July

  • The Robotech Masters launch a clandestine expedition to excavate the ruins of the SDF-1. They are discovered by two UEDF soldiers on patrol. One soldier is captured and held in the Masters’ command vessel.1
  • An unauthorized mission is launched that succeeds in rescuing the captured soldier. During the ensuing battle, reinforcements arrive on both sides, and the fight quickly devolves into a stalemate. A Robotech Masters mothership arrives on the scene and the Bioroids and command vessel withdraw.1

2030 January

  • Under the direction of General Rolf Emerson, Zor Prime (who has been mistakenly identified as a captured and brain washed UEDF soldier) is assigned into a UEDF unit. It is hoped that a military environment will awaken his memories as a Bioroid pilot. 1st Lieutenant Dana Sterling’s 15th squad is chosen because of her part Zentraedi heritage, and because of her previous encounters with him in the field.1
  • Zor Prime overhears General Emerson’s comments that an attack by the Earth fleet is in preparation, and this information is intercepted by the Masters, who have implanted a neurosensor into Zor’s brain to monitor him and gather information on the human battle plans.1

2030 March

  • Earth launches its first major offensive against the Masters in space. With the Masters tipped off to the attack and to the strength of Earth’s forces by the implant in Zor Prime’s brain, it is quickly and soundly defeated, and the few surviving capital ships fall back to the ALuCE-1 base on the moon.1
  • Zor begins to remember the Triumvirate nature of the Robotech Masters. This is confirmed by observations made during the battle in space. 1st Lieutenant Dana Sterling and Zor Prime also discover the presence of alien flowers within the ruins of the SDF-1.1
  • UEDF Supreme Commander Field Marshall Leonard orders that a second assault wave be deployed with orders to link up with the remnants of the first assault wave and then launch a combined attack on the Masters.1

2030 April

  • The Robotech Masters, through information provided by their unwitting spy, Zor Prime, ambushes Task Force Cavalry One has been sent to relieve the battered remnants of the 1st Assault Wave. Despite the odds, the 1st Assault Wave and Task Force Cavalry One succeed in their counter attack, forcing the Robotech Masters to withdraw. Cavalry One proceeds to the moon and the remaining ships of the 1st Assault Wave safely return to Earth.1
  • General Rolf Emerson is appointed to lead the second major offensive against the Robotech Masters.1

2030 May

  • En route to the Moon, General Emerson’s force is attacked by a battlegroup of small Robotech Masters capital ships and Bioroids. After a vicious firefight, Emerson employs a dangerous technique known as an “Orbital Warp Blast” to defeat the Masters’ forces and is able to deliver troops and supplies to Moon Base Luna.1

2030 June

  • Along with reinforcements from deep space, General Emerson’s Second Offensive launches a combined attack on the Robotech Masters fleet, allowing the insertion of the 15th Squadron, Alpha TAC Regiment into the alien mothership. The Robotech Masters reassert their control over their clone, Zor Prime, and succeed in capturing the insertion team. Dana Sterling and her team manage to escape and rescue Zor Prime while also destroying the Masters’ mothership in the process. Both sides withdraw as a final decisive battle looms on the horizon.1
  • The situation for the Robotech Masters has become desperate. Their clones are becoming harder to control and increasingly unreliable while most of their protoculture pods have become infected by germinating Flowers of Life. The Masters resolve to recover the protoculture factory, locked within deep recesses of Zor’s battlefortress (now the ruins of the SDF-1.)1
  • The Invid Sensor Nebula arrives in Earth space, alerting the Robotech Masters to the imminent arrival of the Invid.
  • Triggered by being inside the ruins of the SDF-1, Zor Prime regains the memories of the original Zor, founder of the great Robotech civilization and creator of Robotechnology. Zor Prime vows to destroy the Robotech Masters and the protoculture matrix once and for all.1
  • Despite the Masters’ ultimatum demanding the humans leave Earth immediately, Field Marshall Leonard orders all forces to gather for a final assault. Casualties on both sides are heavy, with Leonard and General Emerson both being killed in action. Despite heavey losses, the Masters press on toward their objective: the ruins of the SDF-1.1
  • With the assistance of Dana Sterling and the 15th Squadron, Alpha TAC Regiment, Zor succeeds in having his revenge on the Masters and stops them before they can recover the protoculture. After ensuring that Dana and her friends are safely outside of the expected blast radius, Zor attempts to destroy the protoculture matrix by detonating the Masters flagship over the ruins of the SDF-1. However, Zor’s last valiant act only succeeds in releasing the spores of the Invid Flower of Life into the sky; spreading the protoculture far and wide instead of destroying it.1
  • The Second Robotech War ends.1
  • With the UEDF severely depleted, EBSIS is now the dominant world power.4
  • Massive population of Tiresian refugees is dumped on North America by the remaining Robotech Masters motherships.

2030 August

  • A triumvirate of second level Robotech Masters, after their mothership crashes in Burma at the end of the war, make contact with and take command of remnant Zentraedi Malcontents in the South East Asia Control Zone. These Masters embark on a plan to repair a Zentraedi ship and gather enough Flower of Life seeds to rebuild their empire.9
  • Yakuza consolidates control of the local Japanese government in post war New Tokyo. Japan drops out of the UEG.8F

2030 September

  • Reserve force built up on Moon Base ALuCE II.8F

2030 October

  • UEDF begins bolstering its forces with private contractors (mercenaries).

2030 November

  • Remaining Robotech Masters’ forces in North America and South East Asia continue to collect as much protoculture as they can, destroying the fields as they are harvested, to keep them from falling into Invid hands. 10B

2031 February

  • Attack on Site 626, Nevada, by remnant Robotech Master forces, commanded by a surviving second level Robotech Master, Dalmeric Khane. Attack responded to by Alpha TAC Regiment, Major Dana Sterling commanding. Major Sterling captured by Robotech Masters’ forces. Masters attempt to press Sterling into service utilizing the susceptible nature of her Zentraedi DNA.10B
  • Major Sterling, now controlled by the Robotech Masters, leads an attack on a protoculture refinery. Site defended by Lt. Dante of the 14th Squadron, Alpha TAC Regiment. Attack repelled by the timely use of indirect fires.10B
  • Colonel Marie Crystal leads an attack on the Robotech Masters’ base in Nevada, destroying their forces. Major Sterling is during the battle.10B

2031 April

  • Tokugawa-class ship, UES Marcus Antonius, commanded by Colonel Johnathan Wolfe, returns to Earth with the Robotech Repair Satellite and a small battle group. 2C, 8F, 9
  • The UES Marcus Antonius evacuates Major Dana Sterling and other former members of her unit, as well as 175,000 triumvirate clone refugees. 2C, 9
  • Summit at UEDF installation Pinnacle Base: all UEG member states, territories and several outside independent states meet to discuss the security situation. The EBSIS is conspicuous in its absence. The possibility of Invid attack, the EBSIS and what to do about the Flowers of Life head up the topics of discussion. The Defoliators Faction (a non-governmental lobby for defoliation of the Flower of Life) want to destroy all flowers and protoculture. (This lobby is led by Colonel Wolfe’s son, Johnathan Wolfe Jr.8F
  • The Summit decides to address the immediate threat of EBSIS aggression, rather than concentrate on rebuilding orbital defenses.

2031 May 13

  • EBSIS launches preemptive strike against West Germany, destroying Passau in a preemptive nuclear strike. EBSIS forces quickly pour through the pass near the ruins of Passau and the Fulda Gap with support from space based indirect fire. UEDF forces are quickly overwhelmed.4
  • Second Global Civil War begins.4

The Sentinels Campaign

The Sentinels Campaign

by Tim Wing

(For a full list of sources, please see below.)

2015 January

  • The Reconnaissance Expeditionary Force (REF) is formed as a branch of the UN Spacy. Charged with surveying habitable planets in the local group for colonization and proofing navigable routes to the Robotech Master’s homeworld.5
  • The Heavy Cruiser UES Tristar, first ship of her class, built at the Robotech Factory Satellite (now designated Space Station Equality).4

2015 March

  • REF survey fleet secures the Robotech Repair Satellite, which is found abandoned in the vicinity of Barnard’s Star System. (Speculation is that it was left here by the Zentraedi Main Fleet during Dolza’s attack to act as a relay point and repair facility after the expected victory. This of course did not happen, and the satellite was abandoned.) Though depleted, the task force manages to fold the Repair Satellite back to Earth-space.

2015 March 27

  • Construction of the UES Pioneer (SDF-3) begins at Space Station Equality (the Robotech Factory Satellite) orbiting Earth.9
  • The Alpha Veritech Program suffers a setback when the first prototype crashes in testing. 11

2016 AD

  • Invid arrived on Spheris.4
  • First Valivarre Class Super Dimensional Battleship (SBB) commissioned, built at the Robotech Factory Satellite.4

 2016 January

  • Preliminary navigational surveys are conducted by REF long-range advance scout vessels, laying the groundwork for the main Reconnaissance Expeditionary Force.1

2016 April

  • Launch of a close-range colonization fleet bound for planet Eden in the Groombridge 34 System.6

2016 July

  • UES Angel’s communications cease near the center of the Milky Way Galaxy. (News about this ship is not publicized.)6

2017 October

  • Development of the new Destroids begins.11

2017 November

  • VQ-6 Vandal pilotless prototype completed and tested.11

2020 AD

  • New Edwards Test Flight Centre established as a weapons testing center on Eden.6
  • VF/A-6 Alpha enters production. Serves with the REF and the UEDF TASC and TAF.4

 2022 AD

  • Personnel for REF selected: 300,000 humans, 40,000 Zentraedi.11
  • Rem (a clone of Zor) and Cabell (a Tiresian scientist) pursue a way to produce viable Flower of life seeds on Tirol. 8A

2022 December

  • VF/A-6 Alpha and YBF-1 Beta docking first tested with mixed success by pilots Commander Max Sterling and 2nd Lieutenant Karen Penn.11
  • UES Pioneer (SDF-3) launches and takes its position as the flagship of the REF, marking the official start of the “Pioneer” mission.1
  • First wave of Invid, a scout element, take the capital city of Tirol. Resistance is less than what was expected. Invid main body arrives and secures rest of planet. When the Invid fail to find viable examples of Flower of Life, a schism develops between the Regent and the Regess.  Regess departs Tirol for Optera with her contingent.8A

2023 January

  • Captain Rick Hunter and Admiral Lisa Hayse marry on the Robotech Repair Satellite.8A
  • Pioneer Mission departs for Tirol, 75% of troops in stasis for the voyage.8A The Pioneer mission consists of four Battle Groups: the Mercury Battle Group consisting of the UES Pioneer and five Valivarre class ships, and the Mars, Jupiter and Saturn Battle groups which consisted of 102 Banshee class, 4 Geneva-class, 30 Battle-class, 22 Tristar-class and 6 Tokugawa-class ships… 164 ships total.
  • The plan is for the Mercury Group to fold into Tirol Space first and make contact. If hostilities ensue, the battle group would immediately re-fold to link up with the Main Fleet (Mars, Jupiter and Saturn Battle groups).
  • Regent returns to Optera with the Invid main body. Leaves head scientist Obsim in charge of planetary garrison of inorganics on Tirol. 8A
  • Regess permanently splits the Invid race, taking a significant contingent with her to the planet Praxis. Included in her contingent of Invid vessels is a captured Karbarran ship, on which she has collected examples of the Praxan, Karbarran, Peryton, Spherisian, and Garudan races for biological experiments. 8A
  • Obsim collects data from Tiresia’s records of where the Robotech Master’s fleet is heading and transmits this information to the Regess. 8A

2023 October

  • SDF-3 and the rest of the Mercury Battle Group de-fold into Tirol space.8A
  • Invid immediately attack. The battle group’s defense is uncoordinated with one fighter squadron launching before the order is given, causing them to be cut off from the rest of the battle group. This delays the SDF-3 and the rest of the battle group from folding to the Main Fleet Assembly Point, giving the Invid enough time to damage the SDF-3’s fold generators. 8A
  • The Mercury Battle Group, unable to fold out of Tirol space, decide to press the attack. Initiate Operation Ground Hog: Invasion of Tirol. Heavy casualties are sustained during the operation due to initial lack of air support. 8A
  • The Tiresian scientists Cabell and Rem manage to make radio contact with the SDF-3. Transmit intelligence concerning the Invid capabilities on Tirol and offer to share more if they are rescued. A Special Forces Team is sent in and manages to make the extraction.8A
  • Regess arrives on Praxis.8A
  • Obsim and the garrison’s Invid brain are captured by a task force commanded by General T. R. Edwards. At General Edward’s direction, the brain gives an order for all Invid forces to stand down, to include the reinforcement fleet sent by the Regent.8A

2023 November

  • Regess stays on Praxis to pursue experiments with a newly constructed Genesis Pit and dispatches Invid Scientist Tesla to Haydon IV with her collected specimens on the Karbarran ship Farrago. After arriving on Haydon IV, the ship’s cargo stages a mutiny, and takes Tesla prisoner.8A

2023 December

  • Main Expeditionary Fleet arrives, Tiresia Base is established and staffed by REF troops. Massive relief effort for the Tiresian citizenry begins. 8A
  • The Farrago arrives in Tirol Space and makes contact with REF. The ship is followed by an Invid Pursuer Drone (a very large automated homing reaction warhead) which is promptly engaged and destroyed by the SDF-3’s reflex cannon.8A
  • The Plenipotentiary Council, the civilian oversight committee assigned to the Pioneer Mission, elects to split the fleet, assigning half to the so called Sentinels Alliance and half to guard Tirol (Admiral Lisa Hayse-Hunter and General T.R. Edwards commanding, respectively). Captain Forsythe takes command of the SDF-3.8A
  • Mining of Fantoma’s monopole ore resumes with Rear Admiral Breetai Kirandik in charge.8A
  • The Robotech Factory Satellite and the Robotech Repair Satellite fold to provide support to the Pioneer mission.4
  • Regess conducts biological experiments on live Praxins in the Genesis Pit located on Praxis.8A
  • Predicting the Sentinels Alliance’s first target, the Regent sends reinforcements to Karbarra. His group commander then predicts (or guesses) the most likely point of defold, and arrays his forces appropriately.  Despite the Invid’s tactical advantage, Sentinels fleet prevails in a lopsided victory.8A
  • Invid occupation of Karbarra: civil and industrial base are left intact and set to producing weapons for the Invid. To insure compliance, the Invid hold the children of the Karbarran leadership hostage.8A

2024 January

  • Special Forces reconnaissance team dispatched to Karbarra, at the insistence of the Karbarrans. The team enters the occupied capital city through underground mining passages. Link up with Karbarran resistance fighters and discover the internment camp where the Invid are holding the Karbarran children.8A
  • While the Special Forces team is conducting its reconnaissance mission, Invid reinforcements arrive in Karbarra space. A brief battle ensues, with the Sentinels Fleet repelling the reinforcements.8A
  • Under duress, Tesla is forced to convince the planetary garrison that he has captured the Farrago and now holding the crew hostage. It works, and the ship is allowed to slip through Karbarra’s formidable planetary defenses, unmolested. Once inside the capital city’s defensive dome, REF forces on the Farrago launch an attack on the Invid garrison. Simultaneously, Karbarran resistance fighters and REF Special Forces launch an attack on the internment camp. Word of the liberation of the children spreads and the Karbarrans fall into open rebellion.8A
  • Karbarra is liberated.5

2024 February

  • Pop singer Lynn Minmei is appointed the head of Moral Welfare and Recreation (MWR) on Tirol.8A

2024 March

  • General T. R. Edwards directly contacts the Invid Regent through channels provided to him by his captured Invid Brain. Evidence suggests that he passed classified materials relating to the Sentinels Fleet to Regent, in exchange for agreement to a summit on Tirol. 8A

2024 June

  • Monument to “Haydon” found on Karbarra. 8A
  • Doctor Emil Lang instructs the life-like android Janice Em to seduce the Tiresian scientist Rem, in order to gather intelligence on the Haydonites.8A
  • The REF and the Sentinels Alliance elect to keep the majority of their fleet at Karbarra, in order to protect the planets much needed ship yards from future attacks by the Invid. A reconnaissance task force consisting of the Karbarran ship Farrago, a Battle-class Super Dimensional Heavy Cruiser the UES Inchon, and ten Banshee class Destroyers is split off from the main Sentinels Fleet, commanded by Admiral Lisa Hayse-Hunter.

2024 July

  • After determining that the planet Praxis is unsuitable for cultivation of the Flower of Life, the Regess leaves Praxis for Haydon IV. Before leaving, she destroys nearly all Flowers of Life on Praxis. She leaves with roughly 10% of the planet’s population to work as slaves on a as yet unspecified Invid colony world. The other 90% percent of the Praxan population is liquidated. She then pushes one of Praxis’ moons into a retrograde orbit, in order destroy any remnants of the Flower of Life.8A

2024 August

  • The Farrago task force arrives to find Praxis abandoned. The task force command group makes land fall with to investigate further. While on the planet’s surface, the Regent’s forces fold into Praxis space in superior numbers, and destroy all twelve ships in the task force, stranding the survivors. After the battle, Regents forces return to Optera without bothering to mop up.4, 8A
  • General T.R. Edwards is informed of the attack by the Regent. The REF is lead to believe there are no survivors (which is the opinion of the Regent’s forces at least).8A

2024 December

  • The Regent sends a simulagent clone of himself to Tirol to attend the summit with the Plenipotentiary Council.4 While attending the summit, an assassination attempt carried out by disgruntled REF personnel on the Regent’s proxy.8A
  • Praxis is discovered to be geologically unstable due to the increasing proximity of its moon.8A
  • Tesla begins to “change” due to ingestion of locally grown fruits of the flower of life. 8A
  • The stranded members of the task force discover that one of the Banshee-class destroyers, the UES Ark Angel (not to be confused with the later Ark Angel-class Long Range Colony Ship), appears to be intact. Colonel Wolfe and a small crew are sent up to the ship to attempt to put it back in operation. While on the destroyer, Tesla and Perytonite Burak manage to commandeer the ship for their own, and fold away from Praxis. During the computation of fold coordinates, the android Janice Em intervenes and diverts to ship to Tirol.8A
  • Once on Tirol, Tesla and Burak are taken into custody by the REF.
  • Colonel Wolfe tries to convince the Plenipotentiary Council to send a ship to rescue the stranded Sentinels, but the council declines for fear of derailing the ongoing peace talks with the Regent (sic).8A
  • Doctor Emil Lang arranges for Colonel Wolfe to “steal” the damaged Banshee-class Destroyer he arrived in, so that he may at least have a chance to save the survivors of the task force.8A
  • Tesla manages to escape from his cell and then kills the Regent’s clone. Assassination gets blamed on the REF crew members who were planning to assassinate the Regent in the first place. Peace talks break down. Regent decides to “stay dead”.8A

2025 January

  • Lone Praxan survivor is discovered by the Sentinels.8A
  • Colonel Wolfe arrives in the UES Ark Angel just in time to rescue the survivors before the tidal forces of the planet’s moon tear Praxis apart. The ship then folds back to Karbarra to rejoin the Sentinels Main Fleet.4, 8A
  • Drawing from lessons learned from the Praxis debacle, REF comes to the informed decision that they cannot send under strength battle groups into possible combat situations with the Invid. Invid tactics, as it was discovered in the Praxis campaign, favored massing forces for fold ambushes. With this in mind, the REF decides that any battle group participating in a planetary assault must be large enough to fight off a large Invid force. To this end, they suspend all future combat operations until they expand the fleet enough to continue to guard Tirol and Karbarra, while still sending an adequate force to take the next objective.
  • The Garudan, Spherisian and especially the Peryton members of the Sentinels are not pleased by the delay in freeing their home worlds.
  • Garfish-class Super Dimensional Scout Cruiser (SCS) begin production and commissioning on the Robotech Factory Satellite and the Robotech Repair Satellite.4

2025 March

  • Commander Miriya Sterling gives birth to Maia Sterling.2, 8A

2027 February

  • The Ministry of Defense, on Earth, re-designates the REF the United Earth Expeditionary Force (UEEF).2
  • Last VF/A-6 Alphas are divested and transferred to the UEEF, as they are replaced in UEDF service by the VF-8 Logan.

 2027 September

  • The UEEF sends a reinforced battle group to Garuda, consisting of a fleet of 70 ships. A scout team is dispatched to the planet’s surface after the fleet establishes space supremacy. They make contact with Garudan resistance fighters and remnants the Robotech Master forces in the tribal areas. They find that most of the planet is patrolled by inorganics due to the air’s toxicity. Garudans are being used for slave labor to harvest Flowers of Life.8A Garuda is the primary farm planet in the Invid’s controlled territories.
  • The scout team comes into contact with, and are captured by Invid. They are questioned about the location of the protoculture matrix, information of to which the soldiers are not privy. Team is tortured by  being forced to breath the local toxic air. The Invid determine that Rem, who is a member of the scout team, is a clone of Zor. Garrison commander decides to transport him to Haydon IV as a gift to the Regess.8A
  • Colonel Wolfe is on watch when the Invid transport carrying Rem departs the planet’s surface. He is drunk on duty at the time and allows the Invid ship to slip through the UEEF blockade. Colonel Wolfe is relieved of command.8A
  • UEEF interrogators induce the Invid scientist Tesla to reveal that the Invid can detect Protoculture emissions.8A
  • In a joint operation with the Garudan freedom fighters and left behind Bioroid pilots, the UEEF invades the planet with their main force, overcoming the Invid garrison and freeing the labor camps. The scout team is rescued and the badly effected members are evacuated back to the fleet. Invid decide to liquidate the labor camps during the fighting, but are unsuccessful.8A
  • During questioning of the Invid garrison commander, UEEF becomes aware that Tesla is wanted dead by the Regent.8A
  • Among those exposed to the Garudan atmosphere is Rear Admiral Rick Hunter. The task force decides to immediately fold for Haydon IV, after being promised by the Haydonite members of the Sentinels Alliance that they effected crewmembers could be successfully treated there.8A
  • Effected crewmembers are placed in stasis for the trip.

2027 October

  • Vice Admiral Breetai Kirandik fold to Karbarra with a shipment of monopole ore. The small flotilla is led by Kirandik’s command ship, the UES Valvarie.8A
  • The Haydonites brief the UEEF on Invid dispositions on Haydon IV, and Haydon IV’s planetary defenses. The government of Haydon IV is willingly hosting Invid forces, and will not tolerate any hostilities on the planet’s surface. As such, they strongly recommend that the UEEF not initiate an attack against the Invid, but rather allow them to negotiate with Haydon IV’s government for the suspension of the Invid’s visa. Furthermore, they assure the UEEF that they will be free to make planet fall without fear of molestation by the Invid.8A

2027 November

  • Regess interrogates Rem on Haydon IV using Haydonite technical questioning devices. Accesses Rem’s genetic memories, discerns that the original Zor sent the Protoculture Matrix to the UEEF’s home planet. She then uses Haydon IV’s extensive star charts to swag a general location for Earth and dispatches the Invid Sensor Nebula. Regess then departs Haydon IV.8A

2028 January

  • Regent’s entire fleet masses at Haydon IV.8A
  • The UEEF task force arrives under truce at Haydon.4 Immediately send all effected combat troops from the Garuda campaign down in a shuttle to be treated at Haydon IV’s medical facilities. Shuttle lands and is greeted by Vowad, Prince Administrator of Planetary Functions. Haydonites are obligated by law to render assistance. Hunter and company cured.8A
  • UEEF proposes a prisoner exchange: the Invid scientist Tesla for the Tiresian scientist Rem. The Invid are agreeable to this, however, before the exchange can take place, Tesla escapes. The Invid interpret this as a double cross and imprison all UEEF personnel on Haydon IV’s surface with the masses of Praxins also being held there. The Haydonites allow this to happen, as it is their policy to not intervene in the affairs of visiting foreigners. Leader of the Sentinels Haydonite delegation, Viedt, negotiates with Prince Administrator Vowad to intervene on the UEEF’s behalf.8A
  • Task force commanded by Commodore Rehnquist of the UES Tokugawa arrives in Haydon IV space from Tirol to reinforce the Sentinels. Rehnquist dies when the bridge of the Tokugawa is destroyed while running the Invid blockade, outside of the Haydon IV hostile action exclusion zone. Captain DaCruz of the UES Jutland takes command of the task force and joins with the Sentinels fleet, commanded by Vice Admiral Breetai Kirandik on the UES Valvarie.8A
  • A group of UEEF Marine Alphas are sent to the surface to attempt a rescue, but are shot down by Haydon IV’s planetary defenses. This provocative action by the UEEF harms Viedt’s argument for positive intervention on behalf of the Sentinels.8A
  • Janis Em revels herself to be an android and convince Price Administrator Vowad to grant her an audience with the planet’s Awareness. During this audience, she convinces the Awareness to not intervene in the rescue attempt of the imprisoned UEEF crew and the Praxins, much to Vowad’s chagrin. During the ensuing fighting, Prince Administrator Vowad’s Daughter (for lack of a better term) Serna is killed by the Invid. This convinces Vowad to turn the planet’s defenses against the Invid. 8A
  • The Invid fleet flees the before it can be destroyed by the combined UEEF and Haydon IV forces. Haydon IV is “liberated”.4, 8A

The First Robotech War (Space War I)

The First Robotech War (Space War I)

by Tim Wing

(For a full list of sources, please see below.)

2009 February

  • Official launch ceremonies celebrating the maiden voyage of the SDF-1 Macross begin on Macross Island.1
  • The Zentradi‘s Vrlitwhai Fleet, led by Commander Breetai, arrives within the Solar System.6
  • The main guns of the SDF-1 automatically fire and destroy two approaching Zentraedi scout ships. 1
  • A malfunction of the ship’s fold system results in a hyperspace jump, taking the SDF-1 and Macross Island to the orbit of the planet Pluto instead of its intended target near the moon. Malfunction also results in the complete disappearance of the fold system. 1
  • Forecasting the SDF-1’s most like route back to Earth, the Zentraedi establish an Observation Post (OP) on Saturn’s moon Pandora.10E
  • First Robotech War begins. 1

2009 March

  • Recovery of civilians from the safety of the Macross Island shelters is successfully completed. Supplies and resources, along with much of Macross City, are also transferred inside the SDF-1. 1
  • The Prometheus and Daedalus are attached to the SDF-1 as mecha carriers and begin to conduct flight operations. 1
  • Reconstruction of Macross City inside the SDF-1 commences. 1
  • The main guns of the SDF-1 are found to be useless after the power conduits between the generators and guns were lost when the fold drive vanished. 1
  • A modular transformation of the ship is initiated, allowing for the SDF-1 to fire its main guns, resulting in the destruction of an attacking Zentraedi force. 1

2009 May

  • The SDF-1 enters Saturn orbit. Zentraedi from the Pandora OP capture the crew of a VE-1 reconnaissance Veritech.10E
  • Rescue team is sent, destroys base with charges set at the protoculture reactor core. One VE-1 crewman is recovered.10E
  • The SDF-1 engages a Zentraedi force in the Battle of Saturn’s Rings. The “Pinpoint Barrier System” and the “Daedalus Attack” are employed for the first time. 1

2009 October

  • While attempting to collect supplies from the abandoned Mars Base Sara, the SDF-1 is rendered immobile by a Zentraedi gravity mine trap. Zentraedi commander Khyron’s Botoro Battalion launch a vicious attack, but the SDF-1 is able to escape when the reflex furnaces of the base are detonated, destroying the gravity mines. 1

2009 December

  • Lynn Minmei is crowned “Miss Macross”.1
  • On a routine patrol, 3rd Lieutenant Rick Hunter takes a prototype Armored Veritech into combat and destroys a Zentraedi Cyclops reconnaissance scout which was monitoring the Miss Macross Pageant broadcast. 1
  • Despite the loss of the intercepted transmissions, the Zentraedi crew of the scout ship report their findings back to their commander, Breetai. 1
  • On the SDF-1, new pilots continue to be trained to replace combat loses. In addition to new recruits from the civilian population of Macross, Destroid pilots are trained and re-assigned as Valkyrie pilots, and infantrymen are trained to replace the Destroid pilots.10F

2010 January

  • While the SDF-1 hides in the asteroid belt, a Zentraedi ship under command of Khyron fires on the SDF-1’s command tower, destroying its long range radar. 1

2010 February

  • SDF-1 Operations Officer, Lieutenant Commander Lisa Hayes and the Vermillion Group (Flight Leader – 2nd Lieutenant Rick Hunter and Corporals Max Sterling and Ben Dixon) are captured by the Zentraedi while on a reconnaissance mission.1
  • The human prisoners are taken back to the headquarters of the Zentraedi Main Fleet, where they are interrogated by Dolza, the Supreme Commander of all the Zentraedi.1 During this interrogation, the humans first hear the term “Protoculture”. The Zentraedi were referring to pre-Zentraedi humanoid culture, which the Robotech Masters so strictly forbid them from coming into contact with. Not understanding the significance of this to the Zentraedi, Hayes and Hunter mistakenly interpret this word to be the Zentraedi name for the alien power source used by the SDF-1 and their mecha.
  • During their captivity, the human prisoners manage to escape. Following his failure to recapture the fugitive humans, Breetai is relieved of his command, and his replacement, Commander Azonia, is put in charge of recapturing the SDF-1. 1
  • Upon her arrival in the solar system, Azonia leads an attack on the SDF-1 as a decoy while sending her top ace pilot Miriya Parino to insert micronized Zentraedi spies into the SDF-1 undetected. 1
  • The escaped prisoners manage to pilot a stolen Zentraedi Regult battle pod into space when the SDF-1 comes under attack. They are soon rescued by Commander Roy Fokker and the Skull Squadron. 1
  • Destroids are repaired on the SDF-1 with inferior parts. For example, the replacement of ceramic ammo door servos with conventional steel servos cause ammunition hold explosions; this being one of the top causes of Destroid fatalities. Other examples include the removal of backup systems and armor half as thick as was originally specified.10F

2010 March

  • The SDF-1 punches through the Zentraedi blockade and returns to Earth, landing in the Pacific Ocean. 1
  • Captain Gloval and Lieutenant Commander Hayes fly to the Earth Defense Command Center for Anti-Stellar Warfare (EDCAS) in Alaska, and petition to have their civilian passengers to be allowed off the ship. The request is flatly rejected.1
  • Against Commander Azonia’s orders, Khyron launches unauthorized an assault on the SDF-1, which is successfully repelled using the Daedalus Attack.1 During the battle, 2nd Lieutenant Rick Hunter is injured by friendly fire.1

2010 April

  • Zentraedi ace pilot, Miriya Parino, launches her first direct attack on the SDF-1. She meets defeat at the hands of Veritech ace pilot, 3rd Lieutenant Max Sterling, but escapes, vowing revenge.1
  • Commander Roy Fokker, leader of the Veritech fighter squadrons aboard the SDF-1, dies as a result of wounds sustained in battle.1

2010 May

  • Rick Hunter is promoted to 1st Lieutenant and returns to duty as the pilot of Roy Fokker’s former veritech fighter and the new commanding officer of Skull Squadron. (Note: Contrary to popular belief, Hunter was not made the Carrier Air Group commander (CAG) at this time.1
  • Desperate to force the UNEG to allow him to resettle the civilians aboard the SDF-1, Captain Gloval begins low flights over North American cities, while broadcasting his demands over uncoded frequencies.1
  • The Canadian Government agrees to receive the citizens of Macross City.1
  • During an attack by Zentraedi warships on the SDF-1, the ship’s omni-directional barrier defense system overloads, causing complete destruction within a twenty-five mile radius, to include much of the city of Ontario. Permission to resettle the refugees is immediately withdrawn by Canada.1

2010 June

  • Commander Breetai arrives back at Earth to recapture the SDF-1 with command of the one million warships of the Imperial Class fleet. Commander Azonia is relieved of her command.1
  • Zentraedi spies, who were inserted as micronized Zentraedi, return to Breetai’s fleet. Human culture soon begins to contaminate the Zentraedi.1
  • The SDF-1 leaves Earth’s atmosphere under orders to sortie away from the planet.1

2011 January

  • “Little White Dragon”, the first movie produced in space, premieres on board the SDF-1.1
  • The Grand Cannon is completed at EDCAS in Alaska.1

2011 February

  • Determining the micronian humans to be a significant threat, Zentraedi Supreme Commander Dolza begins to formulate a multi-stage plan to deal with and eventually destroy the micronians.1

2011 March

  • The Zentraedi launch a major assault against the SDF-1, taking advantage of the Daedalus attack to infiltrate the ship. Macross City is badly damaged in the fighting.1
  • During the battle, numerous Zentraedi soldiers, enamored by the culture of the micronian humans, take this opportunity to defect to the SDF-1.1
  • Upon examination of the Zentraedi defectors, it is found that they are genetically indistinguishable from humans.1
  • Captain Gloval and his staff, armed with this new evidence, attempt to convince Earth’s leaders to pursue negotiations with the Zentraedi.1

2011 April

  • In an attempt to exact revenge for being humiliated in battle, Zentraedi ace Miriya Parino attempts to murder her rival, human ace pilot Max Sterling. Inexplicably, she falls in love with Sterling and their historic wedding is broadcast to the citizens aboard the SDF-1 and to the nearby Zentraedi fleet.1
  • Alerted to the wedding, and to the recent defections of the Zentraedi to the SDF-1, Dolza orders his fleet commanders to assemble in order to deal with the “micronian threat” once and for all. Breetai is immediately ordered to destroy the SDF-1. However, due to their exposure to human culture, many Zentraedi refuse to fight. Faced with the threat of mutiny, Breetai orders a withdrawal and unilateral cease-fire. Soon after, Breetai sends Exedore, the Zentraedi Minister of Affairs, as an emissary to the SDF-1 to conduct negotiations.1
  • Despite Breetai’s attempts to pursue negotiations, Dolza has mobilized the Main Fleet in order to destroy Earth and its human population, before they further contaminate the Zentraedi. Faced with their own destruction, Breetai and Azonia decide to join forces with the humans aboard the SDF-1. Concerned with saving his own life, Khyron refuses to join the fight against Dolza and the Zentraedi Main Fleet.1
  • Dolza and the Main Fleet of over four million Zentraedi warships arrive in Earth orbit. Simultaneously, the fleet begins their devastating attack resulting in the destruction of an estimated 70%1 to 95%1A of the planet’s surface.1
  • Despite heavy damage, the Grand Cannon manages to fire, the resulting directed energy blast results in the destruction of a significant portion of the Main Zentraedi Fleet, clearing a path for the SDF-1 and its allies to launch their counterattack against Dolza. Using the Omni-Directional Barrier, along with the singing of Lynn Minmei to disrupt Zentraedi communications, the SDF-1 succeeds in destroying Dolza’s flagship along with most of the enemy Zentraedi fleet. The victorious SDF-1 returns to Earth, marking the end of the First Robotech War.1

The Unification War

The Unification War

by Tim Wing

Forward

The events following the arrival of the SDF-1 are fairly well documented. For an accurate and fairly non-refutable chronology, one need only go to the timeline at the Robotech.com. This site is helpful in that it only lists events that can be verified beyond question. But this is a small amount of information.

For more in-depth historical research, I leaned heavily on the works of Egan Loo. His timeline in the Macross Compendium gives a very explicit series of dates and events, which for the most part reconcile with the known history found at Robotech.com. Though Egan Loo’s history prior to 1999 is Zentraedi centric to say the least, his work covering the post ASS-1 to Space War I (First Robotech War) period is the definitive work on the subject.

As always, I would like to thank those whose work most contributed to the completeness of this chronology; in this case, Egan Loo’s work over the past fifteen or so years has contributed greatly to what we know about the First Robotech War.

1999 July 17

  • Space Station New Frontier, located 36000 km above the Phoenix Islands, detects an intense radioactive phenomenon, followed by an appearance of an object of great mass. It confirms that the object is heading towards Earth. Upon receiving the report, the United Nations Security Council confers with the heads of every nation. They each eventually adopt a response plan. The falling object is determined by its form and other features to be an unknown object very different from a meteorite, and its forecasted path after atmospheric entry is made public (but as a meteorite).6
  • The object is a large alien spacecraft exiting from hyperspace. After approximately eighteen hours, the spacecraft falls to the Earth’s surface.1 Due to the high temperatures and terrific shock waves produced by its descent; it inflicts damage while passing over parts of Central Asia, North Africa and South America. The northern part of South America is hit hardest, with the shock waves causing earthquakes and destroying much of Bogota, Columbia.6 The object comes to a rest on South Ataria6 Island in the South Pacific.1
  • USS Kenosha (CVN-90) and her battle group are sunk by the passing space craft.2A
  • The nations of the world, to include the US and the Soviet Union, call a cease-fire to assess the alien threat.1 Upon investigation by a multi-lateral survey team, the fallen alien craft is designated ASS-1 (Alien Starship-1). Due to the great destructive damage and abnormal weather caused by the shock waves accompanying the fall of the ASS-1, the existence of aliens is treated as top secret until the confusion is brought under control. What begins as an emergency summit meeting between the United States and Soviet Union becomes a meeting between all members of the United Nations Security Council.6

1999 August

  • Precise, accurate, minute investigation of the derelict alien spacecraft begins. The crash site on South Ataria Island is designated a UN sphere of jurisdiction.1
  • The Global Civil War officially ends, though the terms are not satisfactory to all parties.1

1999 September

  • According to the first top secret report of the study of the alien spacecraft, it is discovered that the ship is military in nature, and its crew are on average, six times the size of human beings, with exceptional individuals exceeding fifty feet in height.1
  • Terrified by the all too real prospect of invasion from deep space, a campaign is initiated to establish a United Nations Government.1, 6

2000 January

  • Development of weapons systems for use in combat against the giant alien threat begins in earnest.1

2000 March

  • Establishment of Robotech (Robotic-Technology) Research Group, an alien technology analysis research institute, through joint Japanese, US, Soviet, West German, English and French collaboration.4 This is not to be confused OTEC Corporation (OTEC stood for Over-Technology), which was a conglomerate made up of many of the leading defense and aerospace contractors of the time. OTEC Corp was responsible for the refitting of the SDF-1 and the construction of many of the ships in the soon to be established UN Spacy’s fleet.6

2000 April

  • Research by the RRG on anti-giant combat weaponry systems (later designated as Battloids and Destroids) begins.6

2000 June

  • The planned construction of the Super Dimension Fortress-1 (SDF-1) is formally announced to the world, though the true nature of its underlying alien technology is kept top secret.1
  • Frame work for a United Nations government is officially proclaimed.

2000 July

  • Outbreak of dispute in People’s Republic of Kuwait. The disputes, rebellions and civil wars frequently occurring hereafter in various parts of the world come to be known as the Unification Wars (or the UN Wars).9
  • Construction of Moon Base Copernicus begins.9

2000 October

  • In the Sea of Tranquility on the lunar surface, construction of Apollo Base begins.6

2001 January

  • Inauguration of the UN Government. Harlan J. Niven6 is elected Secretary-General by the General Assembly.

2001 February

  • Project startup on the restoration and reconstruction of the alien spaceship for use as the flag ship of the UN Spacy. The ship is officially named the Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, the apparent name of the vessel in the language of its original owners.6
  • Space launch scheduled for 2006 May.6

2001 March

  • Successful development of “Space Metal” and other new materials by the RRG.6

2001 May

  • Construction of large-scale space manufacturing station begins at L-5 in Lunar orbit.6

2001 June

  • Anti-unification terrorist attack in Geneva Switzerland kills Sara Hayse, wife of then Admiral Hayse and mother of future Admiral Lisa Hayse.2B

2001 July

  • Construction of the first permanent base on Mars, named “Sara”, begins.1
  • Civilians begin to immigrate to South Ataria6 Island (now officially renamed Macross Island), to work on the SDF-1 project.1

2001 August

  • Initial theory of SDF-1’s thermonuclear reaction system (Reflex Furnace) explained by RRG researcher Doctor Emile Lang.6 (This system is the ship-scale “Protoculture” thermonuclear reactor, though the misnomer had not yet come into existence.)

2001 September

  • “Project Excalibur”, the first attempt at developing a Robotechnology-based weapons system is begun. Designed for ground combat, this project eventually leads to the development of the Destroid line of mecha.1

2001 November

  • Theory of the physics behind the SDF-1’s super-dimension-energy cannon (Reflex Cannon) explained.6

2002 February

  • “Project Valkyrie”, a proposal for the development of a variable configuration, all-purpose Robotech combat system is introduced.1

2002 March

  • Grand Cannon System Theory completed.6

2002 May

  • Construction of Earth Defense Command Center for Anti-Stellar Warfare (EDCAS) begins in secret in at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska.5 On the same site, Grand Cannon System I begins construction.1

2002 July

  • First Defensive Battle for Macross Island against an Anti-Unification League attack.6

2002 November

  • At the RRG, the first Earth-made thermonuclear reactor (Reflex Furnace, later called a Protoculture Generator) surpasses critical point (the point at which it produces more energy than it consumes).6

2003 March

  • Establishment of the United Nations Space Agency (UN Spacy).6 The UN Spacy is also referred to in the press around this time as the Robotech Defense Force (RDF), using the term for the new technology that the agency made use of. Though the RDF was a term in common usage, it was never the an official name of any sort.

2003 April

  • Terrorist attack in Yokohama, targeting a UN delegation. 30 die and over 100 are injured. Riots between anti-unification sympathizers and police follow. This attack was the deadliest of over a dozen in major metro areas worldwide. 2B
  • Construction of the first ARMD Hermes-class and AMES/DD Oberth-class begins at L-5 in Lunar orbit.1

2003 November

  • In a factory beneath Apollo Lunar Base, using feedback from restoration work on the Macross, construction begins on a stellar space warship entirely of Earth origin: the SDF-2.6

2004 January

  • RRG develops thermonuclear reaction bomb. Reaction weapons (or Reflex Weapons), using paired-annihilation first explained by Dr. Emil Lang through super dimensional spatial theory, produce high energy destructive effects even greater than those of nuclear weapons.2

2004 February

  • On the Lunar surface, successful test of thermonuclear reaction bomb.6

2004 March

  • Construction on Grand Cannon II begins in the Australian outback.
  • M12 Centaur enters production.4

2004 September

  • Development of first super-small scale (mecha-sized) Reflex Furnace (Protoculture Generator) is begun by the RRG.6 (At this point, it should be noted that the term “Reflex” was applied to two completely different processes: reaction weapons, which derive their energy from the paired-annihilation of atomic particles; and what would eventually be called Protoculture Reactors, which derive their energy from the Invid Flower of Life.)

2004 October

  • Construction on Grand Cannon III begins in northern Tanzania, near Lake Victoria.6

After being hailed by Mars Base Sara, the Zentraedi Cyclops sent by the Captain of the Monitor first knocks out the base’s life support and defensive systems. Responding to the emergency, the Oberth exchanges fire with the Cyclops. The Monitor, under command of Captain Krohn, engages and destroys the Oberth. Colonel Rodriguez then destroys the Monitor with a gravity field cannon (Grand Cannon), sacrificing himself in the process. Before its destruction, the Zentraedi vessel sends a sub-space signal back to the main fleet, alerting them to the presence of Reflex Weaponry. 2B

Lieutenant (SG) Roy Fokker is dispatched in a prototype VF-1, intercepts the Hermes and destroys the bridge of the ship with cannon fire. Fokker then intercepts and destroys a nuclear warhead targeting Macross Island. 2A
  • (It has been speculated by some historians that Lieutenant Colonel T. R. Edwards and Major Anatole Leonard were co-conspirators in the hijacking.2A Colonel Edwards actions later on during the Pioneer Expedition notwithstanding, there is very little historical evidence to support this postulation.)
  • Disinformation campaign initiated to make the Anti-Unification League seem like a bigger threat than it really is in order to create public support for greater defense spending. 2A

History of the Global Civil War – 1979 to 1999

History of the Global Civil War – 1979 to 1999

by Tim Wing

Forward

The following is a reconstruction of the events leading up to and including the Global Civil War (GCW). The GCW has also been named, by some, World War III. The author believes the name Global Civil War more accurately describes the nature of these events. Though certainly it was the climax of the Cold War, it was not the full scale nuclear exchange that many were expecting it to be. Rather, it was the sum total of the various proxy wars being fought on the behalf of the two super-powers in the final years of the twentieth century. It was one of these wars that finally lead to armed confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union, though not in central Europe as everyone expected.

One could start this time-line at the end of WWII, and be perfectly accurate in describing it as the lead up to the GCW. But, for the sake of brevity, I will instead start with the beginning of Soviet Involvement in Afghanistan.

(-Tim Wing)

The Global Civil War

(For a full list of sources, please see below.)

1979 October 31

  • KGB quietly “removes” President Hafizullah Amin from power in Afghanistan, amid concerns over his abuse of power and mishandling of the growing anti-government insurgency. The more reliable, former Deputy Prime Minister Babrak Karmal is installed in his place.

1979 November

  • At the request of President Babrak Karmal, the Soviet Union sends additional forces to help fight the anti-government insurgency.

1980 September

  • Beginning of the Iran-Iraq war.

January 1981

  • The US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) begins to support anti-Sandinista Contras in Nicaragua.

1982 November 10

  • Death of Soviet General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev. He is succeeded by Yuri Andropov.

1983 AD

  • Soviet troop strength in Afghanistan reaches a wartime high of 42,000.

1983 February

  • General Secretary of the Soviet Union Yuri Andropov is hospitalized for renal failure. As a gesture of good-will and Cold-War reconciliation, Switzerland offers the General Secretary medical treatment in Geneva.

March 1983

  • US President proposes the Strategic Defense Initiative, an anti-ICBM defense network to protect America from nuclear attack. The proposal fails to gain funding from the House, due to the ongoing oil crises and resulting budget crunch.

October 1983

  • US forces invade the Caribbean island of Grenada, overthrowing the Marxist military government and expeling Cuban troops.

November 1983

  • Exercise Able Archer 83 — Soviet Intelligence Services misinterpret a test of NATO’s nuclear warfare procedures as a fake cover for an actual NATO attack; in response, Soviet nuclear forces are put on high alert and come perilously to launching a preemptive nuclear strike.
  • The misinterpretation of Western intent leads to significant changes in the institution Intelligence Reporting Cycle of the Committee for State Security (KGB) and Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU).

1985 November

  • US President Ronald Reagan and Soviet Secretary General Yuri Andropov meet for the first time at a summit in Geneva, Switzerland.

1986 October

  • US-Soviet Reykjavik Summit. Minor progress made in nuclear arms control.

1986 November

  • Fall-out from the Iran-Contra scandal ends all funding and military aid for the “Contra” insurgents fighting against the Soviet backed Sandinista government in Nicaragua.

1987 AD

  • The Soviet Union’s bloody, but largely invisible war in Afghanistan grinds to a stale mate. Newly installed President Haji Mohammad Chamkani, a non-communist ideologue and well-connected tribal leader, forges a sustainable Islamic Communist (or Islammunist, a named coined by western observers) government. Mujahedeen rebels continue to strike from strongholds in Pakistan, but no longer present a credible threat to the Afghan Government.
  • Soviet Troop levels fall to around 15,000, a number that is maintained for the next ten years.

1987 September

  • The Battle of Cuito Cuanavale, an important episode in the Angolan Civil War (1975 to 2002), begins.

1987 December

  • Contra insurgents suffer a crushing defeat at the hands of Sandinista Government troops (backed by thousands of Cuban and East Bloc military advisers), never again to pose a serious threat to the government of Nicaragua.

1988 May

  • Arms Control Summit takes place in Moscow. Though the atmosphere was amiable, no significant progress is made.

1988 August

  • Ceasefire in the Iran-Iraq War. By this time, Iraq is left bankrupt and owing a huge war debt to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

1988 December

  • South Africa troops withdraw from the Angolan Civil War.

1989 AD

  • Last of the oil embargoes comes to an end, as OPEC increases production caps and brings supply back in line with world demand.

1989 December

1990 January

  • Soviet Troops enter Romania to “restore order” and put down the anti-communist uprising. Peace is violently restored and a new “Pro-Russian” Communist Government is put in place.
  • Pundits in the West speculate that the uprising was allowed to happen in the first place so that the Soviet Union would have an excuse to intervene and bring Romania back into the fold of the Warsaw Pact.

1990 August

  • Iraqi Army invades Kuwait, citing Kuwait’s overproduction of oil (which was driving down oil prices which were Iraq’s only source of hard currency) and Kuwaiti slant drilling into Iraqi oil fields.
  • Trade embargo of Iraq is vetoed by the Soviet Union in the UN Security Council.
  • United States deploys elements of the 82nd Airborne at the request of Saudi Arabia, to protect against a possible invasion.

1990 September

  • NATO begins troop build-up in northern Saudi Arabia.

1990 November

  • A condemnation of Iraq’s Invasion of Kuwait passes the UN Security Council with a 12-0 vote (Soviet Union, Cuba and Yemen abstaining).
  • A coalition of NATO and Saudi Arabian troops (as well as token troop commitments from most countries in the Arab World) is massed on the Kuwaiti border. By the end of December, their total number would exceed 750,000.

1990 December

  • The Soviets, whose economy was kept afloat throughout the eighties by petro-dollars, sees an opportunity to destabilize the world petroleum market and increase the price of crude oil. To that effect, they send a team of 650 “technical experts and advisors” to Kuwait City to act as a political trip wire.
  • Overthrow of the Costa-Rican government by Nicaraguan backed revolutionaries.

1991 January

  • The United States “advises” the Soviet Union to withdraw their personnel from Kuwait. The Soviets are unwilling, claiming that they cannot in good conscience “clear the way” for a NATO escalation in hostilities.
  • Soviets sponsor the first of many peace talks in Moscow, between US Secretary of State and Iraqi Foreign Minister Tariq Aziz.
  • Soviet Personnel continue to arrive in Kuwait to assist with reconstruction. By April of 1991, over three thousand Soviet Citizens are working in Kuwait.
  • Muslim “volunteers” start to arrive in mass from the USSR’s Central Asian Republics to aid their fellow Muslim-Socialist (i.e. Ba’athist) brothers.

1991 October

  • A negotiated settlement is finally brokered between the Iraqi Government, the NATO lead coalition and the exiled Kuwaiti Royal Family. Iraq would withdraw from Kuwait. In return, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia would forgive Iraq’s war debts and Kuwait would cease slant drilling into Iraqi oil fields. Behind the scenes, the Soviets sweeten the deal for the Iraqi regime by promising a generous arms transfer to replace the equipment lost fighting the Kuwaiti Defense Force.
  • Iraq becomes a d-facto Soviet Satellite State.

1991 November

  • All Iraqi forces have withdrawn from Kuwait. The Kuwaiti Royal Family returns to Kuwait City. Soviet technical experts stay on to help repair and rebuild infrastructure such as oil production capacity and port facilities.

1991 December

  • All NATO forces are withdrawn from Saudi Arabia.

1992 January

  • Chapultepec Peace Accords were signed in Chapultepec Castle, Mexico City, bringing an end to the Civil War in El Salvador. A power sharing agreement between the Salvadorian Government and the Communist rebel group FMLN is put into effect, with elections to be held the next year.

1992 April

  • A “spontaneous uprising by the people” removes the Kuwaiti Royal Family from power and establish a “Socialist Democratic Republic”.
  • The US criticizes the coupe as a cynical betrayal of world trust by the Soviet Union. This begins a steady decline in East-West relations.

1993 November

  • FMLN wins the national election in El Salvador, bringing the country into the Soviet’s sphere of influence.

1994

  • Fighting between FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) and the Colombian Government escalate, with major attacks on military and government targets throughout the year.

1994 January

  • Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) issues a declaration of war on the Mexican Government. This is followed by attacks on Federal Troops and Police throughout southern Mexico.

1994 February

  • The Soviet Union begins sending massive amounts of money and equipment to the EZLN, through their Central American proxies in Cuba and Nicaragua. The Soviet Government see’s Mexico as its biggest opportunity yet to secure it’s foothold in the Western Hemisphere.

1994 April

  • In addition to the Special Forces units already training the Colombian Army, the United States commits elements of the 75th Ranger Battalion to the war in Columbia.

1995

  • Generally accepted start date for the Global Civil War.
  • Economic conditions continue to decline in the Soviet Union. Though high oil prices have allowed the Communist Party to keep the system afloat, many of the Politburo’s inner circle are beginning to question for how much longer. Some are beginning to talk of drastic measures to “speed up the Worker’s Revolution”.

1995 March

  • EZLN wins a major victory over Mexican Federal Troops, becoming the operating government in the southern state of Chiapas.

1995 April

  • Soviet and Afghan Troops cross the border into Pakistan to root out Mujahedin fighters that have been striking from across the border at Government Troops for the last ten years. The US condemns these actions, stating that it is a clear attack on the sovereignty of Pakistan. The US immediately approves the emergency sale of arms to the Pakistani Government.
  • The initial fighting is limited to the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, where Mujahedin fighters were primarily grouped. The Soviets warn the Pakistani Government not to interfere, as this is a purely punitive operation against rebel groups.

1995 May

  • Soviet Troops are “attacked” by Pakistani border units, and are forced to defend themselves. This brings a series of retaliatory attacks, expanding the scope of Soviet Military operations in Pakistan.

1995 June

  • Space Station New Frontier completed by United States and the European Space Agency, and placed in geosynchronous orbit.2, 4 The Soviet Union immediately protests, stating the space station is a thinly disguised anti-ballistic missile system. In truth, the space station is an early warning sensor system, meant to detect and track nuclear missile launches from the Soviet Union. Though not armed at the time, it was designed to accommodate ICBM interception weapons (both conventional and nuclear). Though technically not a breach of Arms Control Treaties, the Soviet Union treats it as such, and formally pulls out of the SALT II agreement.
  • Nuclear tensions are at the highest they have been since the early eighties.
  • A new arms race begins as both side race to rebuild depleted Nuclear capabilities and field new anti-ballistic missile defense systems.

1995 September

  • Soviet Forces push into Balochistan (South-West Pakistan) and capture the port city of Gwadar. This is a major victory for the Soviet Union, as it finally provides them with a warm water port on the Arabian Sea.

1995 October

  • Soviet Union concludes the war in Pakistan with a treaty ceding the western half of Balochistan Province and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas to Afghanistan.

1996

  • By summer of 1996, over 30,000 US Troops are committed to the war in Columbia. The Soviet Union is sending millions in aid, as well as covert military advisers to train and lead FARC rebel groups.

1997 April

  • The EZLN, with the help of Cuban and Nicaraguan advisers, capture Veracruz and Oaxaca in southern Mexico.
  • The Mexican Government, who up to this time had been trying to downplay the seriousness of the situation, asks the US for help. The US agrees to help with training and equipment, but is not yet willing to send troops due to commitments in Columbia and rising tensions in Europe.

1997 July

  • Joint raid on FARC bases on the other side of the Peruvian by US and Colombian Forces brings widespread condemnation from the Eastern Block. Soviet Union steps up its support for FARC, going so far as to threaten to send troops.

1998 July

  • EZLN forces capture Heroica Puebla de Zaragoza, just 100 km south-east of Mexico City.

1998 August

  • The US finally commits troops to the conflict in Mexico, sending three US Army divisions and a Marine Amphibious Task Force. Federal government activates Reserve and National Guard units.
  • Battle of Mexico City begins.
  • Soviet Union condemns US participation in the Mexican Civil War, stating that the United States is supporting a corrupt regime and trying to stamp out the will of the proletariat.
  • US and Soviet Forces go to a higher state of alert in Central Europe.

1998 September

  • Cuba commits four divisions to the war in Mexico, clandestinely landing them at in Cancun, which is controlled by the EZLN. Nicaragua also commits troops, but is unable to get them to the theater of operations, being intercepted by the US Naval blockade. They later sneak them in through Guatemala.

1998 November

  • Major victory for joint US-Colombian Forces over the FARC in the city of Mitu, in southern Columbia.

1999 January

  • Joint US-Mexican Forces retake Veracruz and Oaxaca, pushing the EZLN and Cuban Regular Army units south into the jungles. Over the course of the next three months, joint Mexican-US Forces slowly push EZLN and Cuban forces South.
  • The Soviet Union starts to make contingency plans to more directly support the Communist Revolution in Mexico.

1999 April

  • Cuba, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and el Salvador commit every soldier available to the War in Mexico. This constitutes an increase of over 200,000 Latin American Communist Troops in the Mexican Theater of Operations.
  • The Soviet Army drops two Spetznaz (Special Purpose) Regiments into Southern Mexico. The Russian Army also makes ready six Air Borne Divisions and stations their Pacific Fleet off 300 km off the coast, in international waters. This fleet can bring another 50,000 Naval Infantry to the fight.
  • The US, which already has 140,000 troops committed to the fight, prepares to send four additional Mechanized Infantry and Armor Divisions to the Mexico Theater.

1999 May

  • US Forces engage EZLN and Cuban units reinforced by Spetznaz troops. First direct confrontation between US and Soviet troops.
  • Soviet Naval Infantry make landfall Acapulco, after running the US Naval Blockade. Soviet Forces are also are landed in Cancun from the island of Cuba. Air Borne Regiments drop into the fight the next day.
  • US and Mexican Forces withdraw from southern Mexico, forming a defensive line south of Mexico City.

1999 June

  • After a six week stand-off, US and Mexican units engage the Soviet Army in actual combat.
  • The US and Soviet Fleets, meanwhile, are involved in a virtual stand-off, with no shots yet being fired.
  • US is at DEFCON 2.
  • NATO initiates Operation Return of Forces to Germany (Reforger), fearing a possible escalation in Europe.
  • Warsaw Pact troops move to the West German border, ready to either attack or repel a NATO invasion.

1999 July

  • More extreme elements of the Politburo argue for n escalation, reasoning that a move to annex West Germany could be made with no fear of US reinforcements, since they are already overextended in Mexico and Columbia. In other words, it is “now or never”.
  • Likewise, Washington is weighing the option of a possible first strike.

1999 July 17

  • Space Station New Frontier, located 36000 km above the Phoenix Islands, detects an intense radioactive phenomenon, followed by an appearance of an object of great mass. 6
  • The object is a large alien spacecraft exiting from hyperspace. After approximately eighteen hours, the spacecraft falls to the Earth’s surface.1

1999 August

  • Precise, accurate, minute investigation of the derelict alien spacecraft begins. The crash site on South Ataria Island is designated a UN sphere of jurisdiction.1
  • The Global Civil War officially ends, though the terms are not satisfactory to all parties.1

1341 AD (AL 1292 23)

  • Annexation of the local group into the Tiresian Republic proposed by Senator Nimuul and debated in the Tiresian General Assembly, at the same time as a deep-space exploration is being debated. The two major political groups of the General Assembly, led by Senator Nimuul and Senator Zol Derelda respectively, combine these into one bill of legislation, which passes.8D
  • Zor Derelda demonstrates his theory of Organic Energy before the Tiresian Science Institute. Zor is selected to participate in a deep-space exploration mission. 8D

  • The Regess believes Zor to be the ancient Pretoxican Haydon returned. Zor uses this to seduce the secrets of the Flower of Life from her. Through a telepathic mind-joining, they exchange technological info… Zor’s complete memories are absorbed by the Regess, and her knowledge of the Flower of Life by him. 8D, 13

1343 AD (AL 1292 60)

  • On Tirol, civil unrest due to new restrictive laws passed by the General Assembly, which is now controlled by Senator Nimuul’s political faction. 8D

1343 AD (AL 1292 62)

  • Unrest turns to open rioting. Marshall Law imposed. The Senator Zol Derelda, and his faction, are placed under arrest by the Senatorial Guard for treasonable views, inciting rebellion and conspiracy to overthrow the government. Senator Nimuul is elected Senatorial Elder, head of the three member Council of Elders. 8D

1344 AD (AL 1292 76)

  • The Azstraph returns to Tirol.8A
  •  The Council of Elders use Zor’s father, Zol Derelda, as leverage to secure his cooperation. 8D
  • Zor creates Zorrlev’dra (Zor’s Technology, but here in referred to the common English term “Protoculture”) from the Flower, having fallen victim to the compulsion placed upon him by the Tiresian Council of Elders.4, 8A, 13
  • Origin of a group of scientist’s “Cult of the Three-in-One” and their ascendancy as the Zorrlev’dra Gisterae. (This translates to Masters of Zor’s Technology, but from here on will be referred to the common English term “Robotech Masters”). This period comes to be known as the Great Transition.4, 8A, 13
  •  Cloning technologies accelerate at a great pace, thanks to discoveries associated with Protoculture.4

 1348 AD (AL 1293 47)

  • Based on his memory of the information exchange with the Regess, Zor creates a Protoculture Matrix to harness the power contained in the seeds of the Flower of Life. 8D
  • Zor Creates genetically engineered “Pollinators” (genetic medication of a common Tiresian house pet, about the size and shape of a small Earth dog) to act as substitutes for the Invid in the flower’s life cycle.8D

1350 AD (AL 1293 82)

  • A cloned slave caste is created to serve as servants and soldiers.8D
  • The Tiresian Legion was formed, made up of professional soldiers and bolstered with ranks of natural born Tiresian conscripts and clone slaves. This force is tasked with protecting Tirol and her off world interests, and soon became a very visible symbol of TME power.5

1351 AD (AL 1294 01)

  • Super long range fold drives perfected.4

 1355 AD (AL 1294 71 / AR 0)

  • The mass production of giant biological weapons for proxy warfare, the “Zentradi,” is begun by the powerful group of scientists, the Robotech Masters, at the behest of the Tiresian Council of Elders (from here on referred to by the common English term “Robotech Elders”).4
  • First year of the Aeon Zorrlev’dra (Aeon Robotech – AR)

1361 AD (AR 1 06)

  • Word of the Robotech Elders’ eugenics experiments and clone slave population brake, the Tiresian people, especially the patrician classes, are aghast. The Elders are ordered to immediately cease their experiments by the Senate. In response, the Robotech Elders call in the Zentraedi and seized control of Tirol, disbanding the Tiresian General Assembly.4, 8D
  • The anti-imperial insurgency (the “Underground”) attempts to free former Senator Zol Derelda from prison, hoping to secure Zor’s help in return. The attempt fails. The Underground then plots to destroy the Tiresian Science Institute and assassinate Zor. The plot is foiled when Zor is warned of the impending assassination by his lover, Arla, a member of the patrician class who is affiliated with the Underground. 8D

1361 AD (AR 1 19)

  • Restrictions placed on natural reproduction, in an attempt to weed out unfavorable genes from the population. Parents are encouraged to have children in clone groups of triplets.6
  •  The Invid begin to evolve during this time. Evolution is inspired by the Regess’ knowledge of Tiresian culture and technology received by her from Zor.8D

1362 AD (AR 1 23)

  • TME sends a Zentraedi fleet to take Garuda by force.4

1363 AD (AR 1 41)

1379-1382 AD (AR 4 24 – 4 77)

  • Karbarra invaded by the Zentraedi main fleet. After a short but bloody war, Karbarra is subjugated. A war of insurgency follows.4

1382 – 1400 AD (AR 4 79 – 7 95)

  • The Robotech Masters “Unify” their sector of the Galaxy under the TME. (This includes all of the systems later referred to as the Sentinels Coalition.) The Masters begin a second wave of space colonization.4
  • Tiresian people completely prohibited from having children by means of natural reproduction.6 Children from this time forward are produced in groups of three identical clones. The offspring of Tiresians with unfavorable genes are assigned new genes by the Center for Reproduction.

1387 AD (AR 5 65)

  • Spheris finds itself under attack during an Invid lightning-raid. Invid troops appear in orbit and harass the Zentraedi stationed there while ground-troops spread about the surface. Before being driven back, Invid transports ferry thousands of tons of the smaller Spherisian Risia Crystals off-planet. These crystals are later shaped into a gigantic cloud of crystalline dust, capable of detecting Protoculture emissions across vast distances. Shaped magnetic fields are used to contain and move the cloud. The Invid Sensor Nebulae is born.4

1393 AD (AR 6 71)

  • Zentraedi ordered to defoliate Optera.4
  • Zentraedi fleet returns to Optera to harvest the rest of the flowers and destroy Optera. In this short time, the Invid have evolved into bi-pedal life forms and have developed a civilization similar to Tiresia’s pre-industrial history. Biological, technical and cultural evolution was spurred by the Regess’ absorption of Zor’s memories. 8D
  • Huge masses of flowers are harvested. The rest of the planet is almost completely defoliated. Invid make a second technological leap, into the industrial and space age. This to is made possible by the knowledge shared by Zor with the Regess. 8D

  • The new triumvirate clones are perfected, and the Robotech Elders retired to their great motherships in Tiresian orbit with their triplet minions.
  • Annexation of the local group completed by the Zentraedi and the TME is consolidated. 8D

1459 AD (AR 18 38)

  • A TME survey ship stops temporarily on Tirol-like planet. By genetically reconstructing the native life, these scientists attempt to influence the emergence of a sub-humanoid adapted to this planets environment, as a way to prepare for future colonization. During its return to its Tirol, the survey ship is destroyed by unspecified military ships opposed to the TME. Records of this event later fueled speculation that “Earth” was the planet in question and that Humans were descended from Tiresians, despite huge timeline difficulties and fossil evidence to the contrary.

1481 AD (AR 22 27)

  • Zor retires briefly to Ci’Va to continue his research and collaborate with his Ci’Vonian colleagues. While there, he pseudonymously pens a series of political and philosophical tracts favoring federalist republicanism over the current Imperium. Zor is recalled by the Elders and is severely reprimanded and severe restrictions were placed on his movement and activities, but his writings strike a chord in the Ci’Vonian people and with the old patrician families on Tirol and elsewhere. Ci’Vonian nationalism blossoms.4

1498 AD (AR 25 27)

  • First Nupetiet Vergnitzs-class Fleet Command Ship completed.4

1519-1520 AD (AR 28 98 – 29 16)

  • The Ci’Vonian crisis begins. The Robotech Elders demand Ci’Va surrender its sovereignty to the Tiresian Mercantile Empire. Ci’Va balks, and the “Supervision Army”, a major fleet of Zentraedi warships, is sent as a threat. The Zentraedi become contaminated by and enamored with Ci’Vonian culture, and eventually refuse to carry out their orders. When word arrives that an example is to be made of Ci’Va, a third of the planet’s population is hurriedly evacuated by their new Zentraedi allies, just as the Grand Fleet arrives to destroy the planet. In all, 500 million Ci’Vonians and 1.7 billion rebel Zentraedi escape into the vastness of space.4

1560 (AR 36 23)

  • First Thuverl Salan class Heavy Cruiser completed.4

1562 AD (AR 36 59)

  • The Ci’Vonians, their many Tiresian aristocratic sympathizers and rogue Zentraedi armies, known collectively to the Masters as “Zor’s Disciples”, declare war on the TME. The Masters dramatically increase the numbers of loyal Zentraedi to counter the threat.4

1590 (AR 41 53)

  • The Rineunadou Lojmeuean class Monitor, the first major Zentraedi capital ship with a reflex cannon, enters service.4

1590-1790 AD (AR 41-77)

  • Caught between the Ci’Vonian War on one front, and the attrition against outlying territories by the Invid, the TME begins to show signs of collapse.4

1662 (AR 54 26)

  • Quiltra Draenitzs class Tiresian multipurpose transport built at the Tiresian Orbital Shipyards and the Cirtzsai Yards.4

1680 (AR 57 44)

  • First Seron Thoun class Border Fleet battle cruiser is completed.4

1786 AD (AR 76 18)

  • First Taul Detrel class Tiresian Destroyer built at the Tiresian Orbital Shipyards and the Civralidor Fleet Yards.4

1792 AD (AR 77 24)

  • A Ci’Vonian fleet arrives on Tirol and launches a massive offensive against the Robotech Empire. The Tiresian patricians, long stifled by the Triumvirates, throw their lot in with the “Disciples of Zor”. The Zentraedi loyal to the Empire are insufficient to defend the homeworld, and the Masters are forced to bring out their Bioroid armies. The Grand Fleet is assembled and folds in to Tirol-space and quickly crushes the Ci’Vonian task force. Half their ships destroyed, the Ci’Vonians are forced to retreat. Never again do they to pose a serious threat to the Empire.4

1800 AD (AR 78 65)

  • The Robotech Masters seizes the reins of power from the Robotech Elders, who remain on as revered advisors. Though the foundations are weakened, an Imperial renaissance begins.4

1831 AD (AR 84 13)

  • The Regult Tactical Battle Pod enters service.4

1838 AD (AR 85 37)

  • The massive Zentraedi Fulbtzs Berrentzs Home Base finishes construction.4

1843 AD (AR 86 25)

  • Glaug Battle Pod enters production. Served with all arms of the Regular Zentraedi Forces and Border Fleets from 1843 onwards, replacing the Khaulaug command battlepod.4

1850 AD (AR 87 49)

  • Invid military campaign intensifies, taking advantage of the chaos caused by the Ci’Vonian War.
  • Yawben, on the edge of the Master’s Empire, revolts.9

1855 AD (AR 88 37)

  • Destruction of Glaug production capacity by a Ci’Va / Supervision Army attack on Roiquonmi Factory Satilite.5

1869 AD (AR 90 84)

  • Invid destroy the automated Reaction Weaponry Factory Satellite. The Robotech Masters, confident of their Zentraedi Fleet’s stockpiles, neglect to construct a new production facility with adequate capacity to supply the TME.5

1940 AD (AR 103 39)

  • Loyal Zentraedi crush the “Disciples of Zor” and are programmed to remember the danger of contact with micronian races. Ci’Vonian stronghold is annihilated by the Zentraedi fleet. Remaining rebel fleet limps away into the darkness, led by surviving Ci’Vonians. Protoculture reserves are dangerously low. Imperial renaissance founders because of the power crisis.4

1950 AD (AR 105 16)

  • Zor sent, on a periodic basis, to seed other worlds with Flower of Life.4 Zor takes all active seeds with him and destroys all records of his research. 8D
  • Zor’s voyages deliver him to Haydon IV, where he has a profound encounter with the planetoid’s artificial sentience, the Awareness. The Awareness reveals to him that Optera was not the original source of the Flower of Life. Unbeknownst to his Zentraedi minders, Zor begins his “quiet rebellion” against the Masters. Zor has by now become hopelessly addicted to the dried leaves of the Flower of Life.13

1979 AD (AR 110 29)

  • The Macross Border Fleet Battlefortress built at the Tirol Orbital Shipyards, assigned to the flotilla charged with carrying Zor on his seeding missions.4

1980 AD (AR 110 47)

  • Zor’s seeding attempts take him to Peryton, Karbarra, Praxis, Garuda, and Spheris. The Flower of Life, however, once planted, attracts the Invid. On each planet the Flowers mutate, adapting to their new environment. Most plants fail to produce seeds capable of producing energy, making them useless to anyone but the Invid.13

1999 February (AR 113 84)

  • Zor steals the single extant Protoculture Matrix from Tiresia and conceals it within the main Reflex drives of the Sian Macross prior to leaving on a seeding mission. The theft of the last remaining viable Protoculture Matrix goes unnoticed by the Robotech Masters until long after his departure.13

1999 June (AR 113 91)

  • Zor is killed in an Invid attack during a seeding mission in deep space. The secrets of the production of fertile seeds of the Flower of Life die with him. The remaining store of fully fertile seeds are hidden aboard the Tiresian Monitor, the Sian Macross. The Macross, manned by a skeleton crew of Zentreadi loyal to Zor, folds to parts unknown.4, 13
  • Commander-in-chief Dolza orders Commander Reno to return Zor’s body to the Robotech Masters on Tirol.13
  • Interstellar war with the Invid continues to chip away at the fringes of the Masters’ galactic empire.13

1999 July 17 (AR 113 94)

  • Space Station New Frontier, located 36000 km above the Phoenix Islands, detects an intense radioactive phenomenon, followed by an appearance of an object of great mass.6
  • The object is a large alien spacecraft exiting from hyperspace. After approximately eighteen hours, the spacecraft falls to the Earth’s surface.1

This Timeline, as it appears above, is based mostly on the Tirolian Chronology from the “A Brief Description and History of Tirol” by Peter Walker with Aubry Thonon, Pieter Thomassen, and Robert Morgenstern (as it appears in the Robotech Reference Guide, 2066 edition). Other Sources Include the excellent (though Zentraedi biased) Chronology in the “Macross Compendium” by Egan Loo and the Timeline as it appears in “Robotech” as compiled by Aubry Thonon and edited by Peter Walker and Mike Perry.

I have endeavored to deconflict all information available, and produce as thorough and complete a time line as is possible. As it stands, there are significant divergences between “Tirolian History” and “Zentaedi History”. This can be seen by comparing the timelines of Aubry Thonon and Egan Loo. The Egan Loo time line is based on the “Manufactured History” that the Robotech Masters created for their Zentraedi henchmen. This history was created so as to extend the Zentraedi’s years of service to the Robotech Masters from a mere 650 years to over 490,000 years! As one can imagine, it created a significant sense of subordination in the Zentraedi psyche.

Also, for the sake of clarity, I have set all dates to be Earth relative, in the common, if not politically correct, BC (Before Christ) and AD (Anno Domini). (-Tim Wing)

(-Tim Wing)
