The M-984’s body was comprised of mixed steel/plastic paneling over a steel frame. The body was capable of providing good protection against small arms fire, good protection against small grenade and shell fragments, and very poor protection against heavier infantry weapons, such as a 12.7mm machinegun round.

Some of these trucks provide full protection from nuclear, biological, and chemical hazards, using an overpressure environment activated by radiation and hazardous chemical sensors, or manually when biological warfare conditions are anticipated. The internal consumables supplies can provide atmosphere for one week maximum for these versions.

VIII. Development.

The M-984 was developed by Renault Trucks for cargo and personnel hauling. These trucks were the workhorses of the United Earth Defense Forces (UEDF) ground forces, transporting men and supplies wherever they are needed. Each vehicle is capable of transporting a fully equipped squad of 12 men or could carry up to two and a half tons of cargo. They were equipped with a self-leveling air suspension that could adjust ride height for over the road or cross country travel. Though the truck was designed and built by Renault, it was also built under license by Nissan in Japan and General Motors in the United States.

M-984 2.5 Ton Medium Tactical Transport 10The M-989 variant of this truck was the specialized utility vehicle developed for the Global Military Police (GMP), for use by the Hargun to transform from cycle mode to battloid mode. The GMP made extensive use of this vehicle before the Garland entered full production since it allowed its operatives to drive around town in an inconspicuous motorcycle, yet could rendezvous with the Hargun Insertion Ground Vehicle for transformation to a combat effective battloid.

Many of these vehicles were produced and many are still in use today transporting goods between towns and cities.
