The SDR-05 Phalanx II Space Defense Robot was one of Maxwell Dynamics four VA/F-6 Alpha based Destroids. The R-05 series Destroids were all based on the Alpha’s leg and lower torso section. These Destroids were designed to provide an inexpensive replacement for both the old R-04 Destroids from the First Robotech War, which were all nearing the end of their useful service lives, and the R-10 series of UEEF Destroids. Maxwell Dynamics originally pitched the R-05 series to the UEEF as a lower priced alternative to the R-10s. Because they were all based on the same platform as the Alpha, they were able to take advantage of economies of scale, thus lowering the per-unit price significantly. Unlike the R-10 series, they would also be able to fill the space combat role of the legacy R-04 series Destroids.

The Phalanx II was the space defense robot variant of the R-05 series of Destroids. There was very little change in concept from the SDR-10 Shark to the Phalanx II. Most of the avionics were carried over and only the addition of short range missiles differentiated it from the Shark. The Phalanx II was the last of the three R-05 series Destroids to make it into production, which speaks volumes about where the United Earth Expeditionary Force placed the importance of this mecha in the overall scheme of things.
