The 1st UN Spacy Marine Expeditionary Regiment (MER) was stationed on the UES Daedalus during the 1st Robotech War. When the SDF-1 made its first and only (ill-fated) fold, the 1st MER found itself in the middle of an inter-stellar war. Because of this, the 1st MER (and her successor, the UEDF’s 1st Naval Infantry Regiment) became the most decorated unit of the Robotech Era.

The 1st MER was a combined arms infantry regiment made up of Destroids and conventional infantry. Though the unit had not received all of its equipment at the time of the SDF-1’s launch and its subsequent sojourn into space, it normally would have been made up of three combined arms battalions with a mix of Destroids and Marine Amphibious Assault Vehicle (MAAV) mounted infantry, and one infantry battalion equipped with MAAVs. The MAAV was not yet in full production at the time of the SDF-1’s launch and the infantrymen of the 1st MER found themselves operating in the role of light infantry. Once the MAAV entered service, the plan was to deactivate the 6th Battalion aboard the Daedalus, to make room for the 120 or so vehicles that would equip the other three battalions.

Attached to the 1st MER was the 1st UN Spacy Marine Aviation Group (MAG). The 1st MAG was equipped with a mix of attack and cargo helicopters, which were to support the 1st MER in land based combat operations. The pilots and ground crew of the 1st MAG, as well as the infantrymen of the 1st MER, were mostly transitioned to Destroid companies and Veritech squadrons during the 1st Robotech War.

The 10th Space Defense Battalion (Provisional) was stood up and added to the 1st MER’s rolls during the SDF-1’s return trip home. This unit was equipped with the newly developed SDR-04 Phalanx and Armored Valkyrie. After the war, the 10th Battalion was disbanded and the SDR-04 was integrated into the rest of the regiment’s battalions.

After the destruction of the SDF-1 during the Battle of Macross City, the unit was reassigned to Ft. Sibley, near Monument City, Minnesota. After the signing of the Treaty of the Southern Cross, the unit was reflagged as the UEDF Naval Division’s 1st Naval Infantry Regiment (NIR). In 2019 the unit was transferred to its final home at Nunavut Base in Nunavut, Canada. From this base, the unit embarked on rotations aboard the UES Achilles, a duty it shared with its sister unit in the Tactical Corps.

In 2031, the 1st NIR went missing along with the UES Achilles. No survivors of the unit are known to exist, and all hands are presumed dead. The 1st MER/NIR remains inactivated to this day.
